Safety
WARNING
TIP-OVER HAZARD. A bookcase can tip over and fall on a child or adult, causing serious injury or death. Always attach this bookcase to the wall with the tip-restraint kit included. Put the heaviest items on the bottom shelf. Never let children climb on or hang from the shelves. Do not put a TV on this bookcase. The kit reduces the risk of tip-over; it does not remove it.
WARNING
CHOKING HAZARD. The hardware bags hold small parts: cam caps, shelf pins, dowels and screws. A child can choke on them. Keep the bags and loose parts away from children under 3 while you build.
WARNING
SUFFOCATION HAZARD. Plastic bags can cause suffocation. Keep them away from babies and children, and throw them away after you unpack.
Before you start What this builds

A 3-shelf bookcase, 30 in wide, 12 in deep and 42 in tall, with one adjustable shelf and a wall-anchor kit. Everything you need to build it is in the box; to anchor it you also need a Phillips screwdriver, a stud finder and a drill.
Lay the carton flat and build on it so the panels do not scratch.

Step 1 Cam bolts and dowels into the sides
NOTICE
Turn the cam bolts, cam locks, connector screws and back panel screws by hand. A power drill or driver strips the holes in the particleboard.

Lay both side panels flat with the rows of small shelf-pin holes facing up. That is the inner face. Screw a cam bolt into each of the six outer holes and push a dowel into each of the six inner holes.
You need: Side panel (A) ×2, Cam bolt (J) ×12, Wood dowel (K) ×12
- Shelf-pin holes up: this is the inner face.
- Screw in 12 cam bolts (J) by hand until the collar sits flat.
- Push in 12 dowels (K), tapping lightly if needed.
Check: Bolts into the face with the shelf-pin holes, not the outer face.
Hand-tight is right: the collar should touch the panel and stop.
Step 2 Cam locks into the top, bottom and fixed shelf

Press a cam lock into each large round hole in the top panel, bottom panel and fixed shelf. Turn each one so its arrow points to the small hole in the panel end, so the cam bolt can slide in.
You need: Top panel (B) ×1, Bottom panel (C) ×1, Fixed shelf (E) ×1, Cam lock (H) ×12
- Press 12 cam locks (H) into the round holes, flat with the surface.
- Turn each cam so its arrow points to the end of the panel.
Check: Arrow to the panel end, so the opening faces the cam bolt.
Set the arrows now, while you can see them; they are hard to see once the panels are standing.
Step 3 Base rail under the bottom panel
NOTICE
Turn the cam bolts, cam locks, connector screws and back panel screws by hand. A power drill or driver strips the holes in the particleboard.

Push two dowels into the top edge of the base rail. Fit the rail under the front edge of the bottom panel, the edge with the edge tape, and fix it with two connector screws and the hex key.
You need: Bottom panel (C) ×1, Base rail (D) ×1, Wood dowel (K) ×2, Connector screw (L) ×2, Hex key (X) ×1
- Two dowels (K) into the top edge of the base rail (D).
- Rail under the taped front edge, not the edge with the BACK sticker.
- Two connector screws (L) down through the bottom panel. Turn the hex key (X) until snug.
Check: Rail under the front edge, not the back.
Line up the ends of the rail with the ends of the bottom panel before the screws bite.
Step 4 Panels onto the first side
NOTICE
Turn each cam lock clockwise until it is firm, about half a turn. Forcing it further can crack the panel edge.

Lay the left side panel flat, inner face up. Stand the top, the bottom with its rail, and the fixed shelf on it, each onto its two dowels and two cam bolts, taped edges all to the same side. Turn the six cam locks clockwise to lock.
You need: Side panel (A) ×1, Top panel (B) ×1, Bottom panel (C) ×1, Base rail (D) ×1, Fixed shelf (E) ×1
- Top panel (B) onto the top dowels and cam bolts.
- Fixed shelf (E) onto the middle set.
- Bottom panel (C), rail down and to the front.
- Turn each cam lock clockwise with the screwdriver until firm.
Check: Base rail down, at the floor end, not up inside the bookcase.
Hold each panel square to the side while you turn its cams; a panel on a slant will not pull tight.
Step 5 Second side and lock
CAUTION
The assembled bookcase weighs about 45 lb (20 kg). Lift and stand it up with two people. Lifting alone can strain your back, or the bookcase can fall on you.
NOTICE
Turn each cam lock clockwise until it is firm, about half a turn. Forcing it further can crack the panel edge.

Lower the right side panel onto the free ends of the top, bottom and fixed shelf, inner face down, so its dowels and cam bolts go into the edge holes. Turn the last six cam locks clockwise to lock. Check that no joint shows a gap.
You need: Side panel (A) ×1
- Lower the second side (A) onto the dowels and cam bolts.
- Turn the six cam locks clockwise until firm.
- Look along each joint: no gap between the side and the panels.
Check: Side tight to the panel ends, with no gap.
A gap means a cam is not gripping its bolt: turn the cam back, press the side down, and lock it again.
Step 6 Back panel and felt pads
NOTICE
Turn the cam bolts, cam locks, connector screws and back panel screws by hand. A power drill or driver strips the holes in the particleboard.

Turn the frame onto its front. Measure both diagonals; when they match, the frame is square. Lay the back panel on it, laminate side down, flush with the outer edges, and screw it on with 18 screws along the sides, top, fixed shelf and bottom. Stick a felt pad under each end of both sides.
You need: Back panel (G) ×1, Back panel screw (M) ×18, Felt pad (P) ×4
- Measure corner to corner both ways. Push the long corner in until they match.
- Back panel (G), laminate side down, edges flush all round.
- 18 screws (M): 4 each side, 3 top, 3 fixed shelf, 4 bottom. Phillips screwdriver, by hand.
- One felt pad (P) under each end of each side.
Check: Back flush with the outer edges, not hanging past one side.
Use the printed lines on the back to find the fixed shelf and bottom; the screws go through the lines.
Step 7 Stand it up, shelf and caps
CAUTION
The assembled bookcase weighs about 45 lb (20 kg). Lift and stand it up with two people. Lifting alone can strain your back, or the bookcase can fall on you.

With a helper, stand the bookcase up where it will go, back to the wall. Push four shelf pins into holes at the same height, two on each side, and set the adjustable shelf on them. Press a cam cap over each cam lock.
You need: Shelf pin (N) ×4, Adjustable shelf (F) ×1, Cam cap (Q) ×12
- Two people: tip it up onto its base and pads.
- Four shelf pins (N) at the same height, counting holes from the bottom.
- Adjustable shelf (F) onto the pins, taped edge to the front.
- Press a cam cap (Q) onto each cam lock.
Check: All four pins in the same row, so the shelf sits level.
Count holes from the bottom on both sides before you push the pins in.
Step 8 Anchor it to the wall
WARNING
SHOCK HAZARD. Wires and pipes can run inside walls. Drilling into a live wire can cause electric shock or death, and drilling into a pipe can cause a leak. Check the spot with a stud finder that detects live wires before you drill, and do not drill directly above or below an outlet or switch.
WARNING
The wall screw (V) is for a wood stud. The drywall anchor (W) is for 1/2 in drywall only, when no stud can be reached. For plaster, masonry, tile or metal studs, buy a fastener made for that wall. A fastener that pulls out of the wall will not stop the bookcase from tipping.
CAUTION
The assembled bookcase weighs about 45 lb (20 kg). Lift and stand it up with two people. Lifting alone can strain your back, or the bookcase can fall on you.

Screw the cabinet bracket to the top at the back, in the middle. Find a stud within 6 in of the middle of the bookcase and screw the wall bracket into it, just above the top. Thread the strap through both brackets and pull it snug. With no stud in reach, use the drywall anchor in 1/2 in drywall only.
You need: Cabinet bracket (R) ×1, Wall bracket (S) ×1, Tip-restraint strap (T) ×1, Cabinet screw (U) ×2, Wall screw (V) ×1, Drywall anchor (W) ×1
- Cabinet bracket (R) on the top, at the back and centred. Two cabinet screws (U).
- Find a stud with the stud finder. Mark it just above the top of the bookcase.
- Drill a 1/8 in pilot hole and fix the wall bracket (S) with the wall screw (V).
- Strap (T) through both brackets. Pull snug; no slack.
- No stud within 6 in? Screw the drywall anchor (W) into the drywall, then the wall screw into it.
Check: Wall screw into the stud, not into the drywall between studs.
Studs are usually 16 in apart. If the bookcase sits between two, slide it a few inches so the bracket lines up with one.
Done Load it and look after it
CAUTION
Do not overload the shelves. Maximum 30 lb (13.6 kg) per shelf and 15 lb (6.8 kg) on the top, spread evenly. An overloaded shelf can sag or drop its load.

Put the heaviest books on the bottom shelf and the lightest on top. Keep the strap snug.
- Heaviest on the bottom shelf, spread evenly.
- Tug the top gently toward you: the strap should stop it.
- In 6 months
- Check the strap is tight and the cam locks are firm
- When you move it
- Take the strap off first, and fit it again at the new spot
- Cleaning
- Dry or slightly damp cloth, no soaking
After assembly
CAUTION
Do not overload the shelves. Maximum 30 lb (13.6 kg) per shelf and 15 lb (6.8 kg) on the top, spread evenly. An overloaded shelf can sag or drop its load.
NOTICE
Every 6 months, and after moving the bookcase, check that the strap is tight and the cam locks are firm. Tighten any that have loosened.
NOTICE
Wipe spills at once and keep the bookcase out of damp rooms. Water swells particleboard edges.
Questions
- Which face of the side panel goes inside?
- The face with the two columns of small shelf-pin holes. The cam bolts and dowels go into that face.
- Which edge of the panels is the front?
- The edge with the edge tape. The plain edge with the small BACK sticker goes to the back, against the back panel.
- There is no stud where I want the bookcase.
- The wall bracket can sit up to 6 in to either side of the middle of the bookcase, and studs are usually 16 in apart, so sliding the bookcase a few inches often lines one up. If not, use the drywall anchor (W) in 1/2 in drywall.
- Can I move the adjustable shelf later?
- Yes. Take the books off, lift the shelf out, move the four pins to another row of holes (nine rows, 1 1/4 in apart), and set the shelf back on. Keep all four pins in the same row.
- My baseboard holds the bookcase away from the wall.
- That is expected. The strap takes up the gap; pull it snug so the bookcase cannot lean forward.
